Recycling Guide

Two simple rules every Northern Virginia household should know to keep recycling out of the landfill:

Keep food and liquid out of your recycling bin.

Food residue contaminates an entire load and sends the whole batch straight to the landfill. Give containers a quick rinse before they go in the bin.

No loose plastic bags and no bagged recyclables.

Plastic bags jam the sorting machinery at recycling facilities. Drop bags off at a grocery-store recycling kiosk instead, and put your recyclables loose in the bin.

Find the trash container that works for you.

Residential Trash, Garbage & Recycling Pickup FAQs

Quick answers to what neighbors ask us most.

What time should I have my cart at the curb?

Please have your cart at the curb by 6:00 AM on your collection day. Our trucks start early to stay on schedule, especially during peak yard-waste season.

What day does Champion pick up at my address?

Schedules vary by community. Use the chat above (or call us at (703) 239-8540) with your address and we'll tell you your collection days for trash, recycling, and yard waste.

What can I put in my regular trash?

Standard household trash: kitchen waste, non-recyclable packaging, broken household items. Please bag all loose trash. We cannot collect hazardous materials, paint, electronics, or construction debris in your regular bin.

What's accepted in single-stream recycling?

Empty and dry: paper, cardboard (broken down), glass bottles and jars, metal cans, and plastics #1 and #2. No food residue, no plastic bags, no bagged recyclables — those contaminate the whole load.

What can't go in either bin?

No hazardous waste, no paint, no batteries, no propane tanks, no electronics, no medical sharps, no construction debris. Fairfax County operates household hazardous-waste drop-off sites — ask the chat for your nearest location.

When is yard waste collected?

Yard waste collection generally runs March through December. Most communities have it bundled with one of their trash collection days. Acceptable: leaves, grass clippings, branches under 4 ft / 50 lbs. Use paper yard-waste bags or open containers — no plastic bags.

How do I schedule a bulk-item pickup?

Use the chat above to schedule a bulk-item pickup — furniture, mattresses, appliances, large items. Additional fees may apply depending on the item; we'll quote you up front.

How do I get a new or replacement trash cart?

We partner with Toter for residential and commercial carts shipped directly to your door. Click the Toter link in the section above, or ask the chat and we'll point you to the right size.

What happens if there's bad weather?

If conditions are unsafe for our drivers, we'll delay or reschedule the day's pickups. We post weather-related service updates on the homepage and notify HOAs directly. Your route resumes as soon as it's safe.
